For 21c Museum Hotels, I collaborated with artist Brendan Fernandes to transform his illustrations — based on West African masks from The Metropolitan Museum of Art — into large-scale video works. Together, we incorporated 3D scans of shells native to his birthplace of Nairobi, Kenya.
Using a Canon EOS RP and Agisoft Metashape, I scanned three of Fernandes's shells: a marbled cone, a mitra papalis, and a cowrie shell. Each shell was layered with Fernandes's illustrations to create a shifting video display that engages questions of patrimony, tactility, and materiality.
